Indiana Casino Workers Seek a Safe Work Environment

Indiana Casino Workers Seek a Safe Work Environment

It first started last month with hundreds of workers signing a petition, demanding their employer, Caesars Southern Indiana in Elizabeth, Indiana, to better enforce its mask policy.

But since then, workers didn’t see drastic improvements in closing the loopholes—guests would hold up their drinks or cigarettes, so they won’t have to wear masks — and took their frustration to downtown New Albany on Wednesday.

More than 40 casino employees held a car caravan demanding changes — prohibiting indoor smoking and seeking better health insurance and wages — and asking for public support. Follow this link to continue reading.

COVID-19 Risk Up to 7 Times Higher for Young Vapers

Young people who use electronic cigarettes face an increased risk of COVID-19 infection, according to a new study.

Teens and young adults who vaped were five times more likely to be diagnosed with COVID-19. And young folks who vape and smoke regular cigarettes have a sevenfold higher risk of getting COVID-19, researchers found.

The finding -- published Aug. 11 in the Journal of Adolescent Health -- prompted lawmakers in the United States to ask the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to clear the market of all e-cigarettes until the coronavirus crisis is over. To read more, follow this link.

Dearborn County Youth Ambassador and VOICE Indiana leader Arissa Riley, a Junior at South Dearborn High School has been named to the TRUTH Initiative national youth council.
The Truth Action Committee is made up of a small group of teens gathered from all over the US who are working with leaders from the Truth Initiative to gain valuable leadership and advocacy skills that can be used to face not just current tobacco abuse problems in their communities, but any social or political issue that a teen may feel passionate about. Throughout the year, the teens will be attending meetings, workshops, and trainings lead by Truth Initiative that will teach the youth these skills. The teens from the committee will be holding a Virtual Action Summit and will be bringing the resources they have gained from this experience back to their community along with their schools. “I was proud to nominate Arissa, she is a multi-tasker who never loses focus on the main objective. She will be a valuable asset to TRUTH just as she is a valuable asset to us here in Dearborn County” -Amy Rose Dearborn County Tobacco Prevention & Cessation.
